RACEHORSE REHOMING: PHEONIX
Updated: 20 minutes ago
Pheonix is a 6 year old, chestnut thoroughbred gelding. He is approximately 15.3hh and built for sprinting, i.e. shorter in the back and big butt. He is a favourite in the stable, everyone will be sad to see him go but happy he is starting a new life. He was with the same trainer most of his career except a short stint in Victoria. Other than when he was in Victoria, I have treated him his whole racing career. He is being retired as it is time for him to enjoy the rest of days with a special person or family. Warning....we will be fussy about the home he goes to.
Pheonix is currently spelling at a professional eventing place. They have taken him over a few jumps and he was very brave. After a couple of goes, he cantered nicely in his approach and jumped without hesitation (video below). I saw him at his holiday home, it was a very busy environment, with trucks moving and many horses being ridden. He was calm and very focused on me rather than what was happening around him. I think he would make an incredible all-rounder, jumping, eventing, heading off to the beach, working equitation, liberty, trail riding etc. He will do best with a lot of variety in his training. He has no known vices and is retiring sound. He has mostly been transported in a truck so would need to retrained to a float. He would suit an intermediate/experienced adult or possibly teenage rider with a small to medium build due to his short back. He is not a confidence builder. He is a sensible, fairly straight-forward horse to ride with no buck, bolt or rearing. He only knows how to racehorse and he does that very well. You will need to be able to help him learn some new skills or have a trainer to guide you. He has a cute little parrot mouth that one of the Racing Vets loves and his neck is a tad low set. Neither of these things detract from his presence and all round awesomeness, He is currently spelling with other horses. I would describe him as fun, brave, kind, likes people and a good communicator. He loves a predictable routine and scratches. One of his original trackwork rider said " I found him to be a huge time waster on the ground, he loves affection. Under saddle he enjoyed the job. I remember him mostly as a baby and he was quite bouncy but only out of excitement not anything nasty". Another of his older riders said "there was that one time when the light went out and he just kept on going, he was not worried at all."
I do not believe he would be suitable in a riding school situation where he had multiple riders, he would be a pretty fun family horse and relationships are important to him. He would respond well to a kind, respectful person willing to spend time with him to build trust and a solid partnership. From a completely selfish point of view, I would love him to be with someone close to me so I still get to see him.
Ideally, you will need to be someone I know or can be vouched for by someone I know. Also happy to accept suitable verbal references as well. Please complete an Expression of Interest Form if you think he may be your type of guy. We would prefer he goes to a home with the intention of keeping him forever. The home is VERY important for him and to the people who love him.
Please note in the recent video of him being walked he is a little footsore from going barefoot a few days before.
